Wigan Athletic have confirmed that Paul Dummett has departed the club after his short-term deal expired.
The former Newcastle United experienced left-back joined Latics on November 8th 2024 and departed on January 10th 2025 after five appearances.
Dummett has now joined Carlisle United in League Two.

Dummett’s season with Wigan Athletic 🔵
On November 8th 2024, Wigan Athletic announced the signing of Paul Dummett on a short-term deal until the January transfer window.
The arrival came in response to Liverpool loanee, Luke Chambers, being ruled out for months with an injury and the need for more experienced depth on the left side of our defence.
Dummett made his debut for the Latics in our 1-0 home loss against Wycombe Wanderers on November 9th, entering the field in the 83rd minute in place of Luke Robinson. 🔄

An impressive bit of late defending to deny Beryly Lubala a chance at doubling the Chairboys lead led Maloney to handing the left-back a first start in our final EFL Trophy Group Stage fixture at home to Nottingham Forest U21s. Dummett featured for 58 minutes before being replaced by youngster, K’Marni Miller, with the scoreline level at 0-0.
The left-back had to wait three weeks to be back involved in our matchday squad again after an injury halted his training sessions. Dummett returned on December 3rd to enter the field in the 73rd minute against Huddersfield Town. At the end of the game, Latics had gone 81 minutes without conceding a goal when Dummett was on the field.
On December 7th, Dummett was named on the bench for our home clash with Leyton Orient. Maloney subbed him into the game in the 78th minute with the Latics 1-0 down.
A mix-up at the back between Toby Sibbick and Sam Tickle saw Dummett’s run of not conceding a goal come to an end in the 90th minute. At the same time, Dummett’s League One stint with Wigan also came to an end.

Dummett made his final outing for the club in our EFL Trophy Round of 32 tie away at Chesterfield FC. With the game level at 1-1, Maloney replaced Luke Robinson with Paul Dummett at halftime. In the 78th minute, Dummett fouled Ryan Colclough with a rash challenge to award Chesterfield a penalty, which they converted. The Latics went on to lose the game 3-2 and bow out of the cup.
Latics’ Defensive Options 🔎
Dummett’s departure leaves the Latics with three natural left-backs; Luke Robinson, Luke Chambers, and K’Marni Miller, with Steven Sessegnon and James Carragher known to fill in on the left side despite naturally looking more at home on the right.
Luke Chambers has indicated that his return is not too far away after posting a tweet with “⏳🔋” accompanying a photo of him celebrating with Wigan Athletic players.
If the Liverpool loanee is going to be re-introduced into the squad over the next few weeks, then Paul Dummett’s opportunities for first-team action would decrease even further after Steven Sessegnon and Luke Robinson have been the regular options.
Wigan Athletic’s current left back options.
Steven Sessegnon (Age: 24) - Out of contract in Summer
Luke Robinson (Age: 23) - Out of contract in Summer
James Carragher (Age: 22)
Luke Chambers (Age: 20) - On loan from Liverpool
K’Marni Miller (Age: 19)
While Dummett’s time with Wigan Athletic cannot be seen as an overly successful one, his experience will be a huge benefit to Carlisle United where they can provide him with more opportunities to play.
I am sure that he has been a good mentor to our younger players in training sessions regardless of his first-team game time.
All the best in your career, Paul!
