Wigan Athletic have confirmed that Calvin Ramsay has returned to Liverpool after his loan spell was cut short.
The young right-back joined Latics on June 5th 2024 and departed from his season-long loan on January 2nd 2025.
Part One: Ramsay’s season with Wigan Athletic
Part Two: Latics’ Defensive Options
Ramsay’s season with Wigan Athletic 🔵
Calvin Ramsay made his League One debut on the opening day of the season off the bench against Charlton Athletic. The young right-back entered the field for the remaining 29 minutes and looked fairly solid in the Latics’ back line.
The Scotland International then made three more appearances off the bench against Reading, Bristol Rovers, and Lincoln City, before Shaun Maloney handed the youngster his first league start against Peterborough United. Latics won 3-0 with Ramsay featuring for 68 minutes 🤝
After missing the next league game against Stockport County, Ramsay started away at Cambridge United but was brought off at halftime with Latics 2-0 down.
Ramsay was benched for the next game against Mansfield Town before coming onto the field at the break with Maloney’s side a goal behind. Latics went on to lose the game 2-1 after a much better showing in the second half.
A strong performance at home to the Stags was enough for Maloney to name Ramsay in the starting lineup for the next game against Blackpool. Latics played some of our best football for the first 45 minutes, but an injury-time own goal in both halves saw the game end 2-2 with Ramsay brought off in the 66th minute.

Ramsay also featured in four cup fixtures during his time at Latics. The right-back started in our EFL Cup First Round fixture against Barnsley, playing 72 minutes before departing the field with the game level at 1-1.
The 21-year-old was a halftime substitute in the Latics’ FA Cup First Round tie away at Carlisle United on November 2nd, keeping a clean sheet as Scott Smith and Jonny Smith scored late extra-time goals to secure a spot in the next round 🏆
Maloney’s last two games including Ramsay have both come in the EFL Trophy. Against Nottingham Forest U21s in mid-November, the defender came off the bench in the 58th minute as both sides played out a 0-0.
Finally, on December 10th, Ramsay started away at League Two Chesterfield and featured for 70 minutes. The youngster departed the field with the scoreline 1-1 before Latics fell to a 3-2 defeat.

Latics’ Defensive Options 🔎
Shaun Maloney has recently shown that Toby Sibbick is currently the top choice for our right-back position. Prior to Sibbick’s run of eight consecutive starts, Maloney was rotating between James Carragher, Calvin Ramsay, and Steven Sessegnon.
As mentioned before, Ramsay only featured in eight League One games, starting three. Whether through injury, off-field issues, or simply falling down the order, Ramsay was not being given enough game time to aid in his development which Liverpool will have been looking for.
With this in mind, it makes sense for Ramsay to return to Liverpool so that they can reassess his situation and find a club that will suit him for the remainder of the campaign.
Wigan Athletic’s current full back options.
Paul Dummett (Age: 33) - Out of contract in January
Toby Sibbick (Age: 25)
Steven Sessegnon (Age: 24) - Out of contract in Summer
Luke Robinson (Age: 23) - Out of contract in Summer
James Carragher (Age: 22)
Josh Robinson (Age: 20)
Luke Chambers (Age: 20) - On loan from Liverpool
On New Year’s Day, Wigan Athletic announced the signing of 20-year-old Josh Robinson from Arsenal. While his time in senior football is extremely limited to only a handful of EFL Trophy appearances for Arsenal U21s, this signing suggests that Latics are planning ahead for next season and looking to develop young players up to the standard that Maloney is looking for.
Josh Robinson signs for Wigan Athletic ✍️
Wigan Athletic have signed Josh Robinson from Arsenal on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
Calvin Ramsay’s development this season was not going to be beneficial to the club next season. Therefore, now that Latics are in a position to bring players in on permanent deals, the arrival of Robinson and the departure of Ramsay make sense and show promising signs for our future recruitment and development plans.
All the best in your career, Calvin!
